Building Permits: The City of Sioux City saw record breaking residential housing construction in 2016. A total of 241 housing units were built, the highest number in the past decade. The previous high was 205 units in 2015. The following table shows the number of housing units constructed over the past decade.

Josh Doering, a senior business administration major at Morningside College, won the Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization 2016 Pitch Competition.

Doering has developed and marketed Seed Slide, a device that allows farmers to safely open and unload large seed boxes.

A panel of judges awarded Doering the first-place prize of $3,500 after hearing 80 college entrepreneurs from around the country pitch their startup business ideas.

Gelita USA has announced plans to construct a new $22 million dollar manufacturing plant at their facility located south of Sioux City and create at least 21 new jobs. The Port Neal complex, which employs about 250 people, is billed as the world's largest gelatine factory. Gelita recently received an economic development incentive package from both the state of Iowa and Woodbury County.

Industrial electronic equipment manufacturing company, Rocklin Manufacturing Co., plans to invest $1.2 million in renovations of their 1880s two-story building and demolish its two other buildings. The plans will double the amount of usable space to 8,000 sq. ft. and include larger assembly and production areas, office space, storage and room for further growth. The state approved financial assistance through the Targeted Jobs Program in addition to tax credits from the state and the city.

The free event will feature Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Plated.com, Nick Taranto, as he shares “The 5P’s of Building a Culture of Innovation & Disruption”.

After considering alternate locations across the country, WestRock, a leading multinational provider of differentiated paper and packaging solutions with two existing Sioux City corrugated manufacturing plants, has announced plans to make a $48 million capital investment to expand one of those facilities and consolidate their manufacturing operations to the newly expanded facility.

The Sioux City Growth Organization (SCGO) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2016 Ripple Awards. The Individual award winner is Renae Billings and the Business award recipient is the City of Sioux City. SCGO presented the awards on Friday, September 30th during their celebration of Sioux City Young Professionals Day.

Each year, the SCGO Ripple Awards are given out to an individual and business who have made a significant 'ripple' or positive impact in the community by excelling in their efforts to attract, retain, grow and develop the Siouxland community.

Sioux City Economic Development of Iowa received a Silver Excellence in Economic Development Award for its 2016 project in the category of Entrepreneurship from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).

Marty Dougherty, Sioux City Economic & Community Development Director, accepted the honor at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 27 during the IEDC Annual Conference held in Cleveland, OH.
