The Sioux City Growth Organization (SCGO) is pleased to announce the winner and runner up of the 2017 Innovation Market. The winner is Sara Gotch with Gnarly Pepper. Second place went to Kyle Madsen with The Perch.
The five finalists from the Innovation Market, held on February 16th, made their pitches to SCGO members and guests on Wednesday, March 8th. The entrepreneurs were given seven minutes for their presentation followed by a three minute question and answer session. A short discussion followed the presentations after which votes were cast.
Gotch won with her idea for a custom spice blend company that pairs its products with plain Greek yogurt. Using the spice blend with the low calorie and high protein Greek yogurt provides a healthier option to dips or mayonnaise. Three of her blends, including onion dip, veggie dip, and like mayo, are already available with plans to add more blends in the future. The resealable spice packs offer many uses and a longer shelf life. Gnarly Pepper spice blends are in some local stores as well as online at gnarlypepper.com. Gotch will receive a $5,000 prize in addition to three hours of free legal services, professional business consultation, and tax services.
Madsen placed second for his idea of a quiet speakeasy with high-end, regionally made spirits in an intimate venue for musical arts called The Perch. Madsen is looking to create a casual yet cultured atmosphere with smooth blues, folk, and jazz. Crafted cocktails, as well as unique non-alcoholic options, will be available for more refined palates. He would also like to include a room to be available for traveling musicians. Madsen is looking to locate near a past Innovation Market winner, Jackson Street Brewery. He will receive a $2,500 prize along with free legal, consultation, and tax services.
SCGO would like to thank its sponsors and everyone who submitted ideas to the Innovation Market this year. We encourage you work on your own business idea and submit it to the Innovation Market next year!
