Local small businesses affected by the impacts of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) are able to apply for the Paycheck Protection Program, or PPP, again beginning today. Businesses are encouraged to act quickly to apply for PPP funds by contacting their financial institution, accountant or attorney. Money is available on a first-come, first-serve basis and is expected to be depleted even faster than the first round of funding. Businesses who received previous funding are not allowed to receive more.

A year removed from their last first in the nation ranking for economic development, the Sioux City Metropolitan Statistical Area has returned to its perch at the top of national rankings for populations under 200,000. After finishing third in 2018, the tri-state area secured the top spot in its population category in 2019 according to results released by Site Selection magazine.

Real estate development firm, Merge Urban Development Group, has announced plans to construct a new mixed-use facility in the 1200 Block of Historic Fourth Street in Sioux City. Merge Urban Development, with offices in Cedar Falls, Iowa and Madison, Wisconsin, will purchase the property at the intersection of Floyd Blvd. and 4th Street for development into leasable market-rate residential units and first-floor commercial space.

People from across the region gathered in Sioux City, Iowa on November 14th to attend the Northwest Iowa Regional Dream Big Grow Here pitch competition to determine the recipients of $7,000 in grant funds and to support entrepreneurs and small businesses throughout the region. Organizers of the competition are pleased to announce Grace Boutique from Sibley as the first-place winner and recipient of $4,000. Brightside Café & Deli from Sioux City was awarded second place and $2,000, and Awaken Yoga from Le Mars was awarded third place and $1,000.

Launch Week aims to inspire and promote collaboration among students, business owners and professionals throughout northwest Iowa by providing workshops, startup presentations and networking opportunities.

Earlier this month entrepreneurs submitted their dream to start or expand a business in the Northwest Iowa Dream Big Grow Here grant contest and recruited family, friends and customers to vote for their entry. Nearly 8,000 total votes were cast and today we are announcing the top three vote-getters, along with two additional entrants chosen by a selection committee, who will advance to the regional competition. These finalists will have the opportunity to present their idea to an audience and judges in a pitch event for a chance to win thousands in cash prizes. The five finalists are:

Downtown Partners in Sioux City, Iowa is pleased to announce that the second year of funding is available for the Downtown Sioux City Storefronts & Start-Ups Grant Program. Applications are available for businesses looking to enhance their downtown spaces. Eligible projects must be located within the boundaries of the Downtown Partners SSMID and funds are strictly for use towards storefront improvements and/or start-up business space needs.

More than 125 economic development professionals and community leaders will be in Sioux City next week attending the 2019 Professional Developers of Iowa (PDI) fall conference. Held at the Sioux City Convention Center September 23-25, attendees will have an opportunity to network with colleagues from across the state. The 2019 theme, “The Changing Nature of Iowa”, will address talent attraction, placemaking, immigration, housing, advocacy and more. An update with Iowa Economic Development Authority Director and Sioux City native Debi Durham is also planned.
