A series of events relating to innovation and entrepreneurship will take place as part of Launch Week, November 17th-19th. Launch Week aims to inspire and promote collaboration among entrepreneurs, business owners and professionals throughout northwest Iowa by providing workshops, business presentations and networking opportunities.

The economic development organizations in northwest Iowa are teaming up to offer $10,000 in prize money for The BIG Challenge grant competition. The BIG Challenge encourages entrepreneurs to Build, Innovate, and Grow their business in northwest Iowa. The contest gives entrepreneurs and small business owners the opportunity to submit their dreams to start or expand a business, then encourage friends, family, and customers to vote for them online.

(Lenexa, Kan., May 21, 2021) - Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) selected the City of Sioux City, Iowa to receive $300,000 in EPA Brownfields funding through the Multipurpose, Assessment, and Cleanup (MAC) Grant Program. During the press event at City Hall, Acting EPA Region 7 Administrator Edward H. Chu presented a novelty big check to Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott.

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced today that the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $1 million grant from the Public Works Economic Adjustment Assistance Program to the City of Sioux City. The grant will assist with the construction of a new $7 million aviation facility on City-owned land at Sioux Gateway Airport/Brigadier General Bud Day Field.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, which adversely affected global, national, and local economic activity, the Sioux City Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) has retained the top spot for populations under 200,000 in Site Selection magazine’s annual economic development rankings.
After finishing third in 2018 and first in 2019, the Siouxland tri-state MSA held on to the top spot in its population category for January through December 2020 according to results released by Site Selection located in Peachtree Corners, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta.

The City of Sioux City saw record breaking residential housing construction in 2020. A total of 521 housing units were built, the highest number in the past 15 years. The previous high was 363 units in 2019. The following table shows the number of housing units constructed from 2005 to 2020.

Meridian Clinical Research, a leading multi-specialty investigative research network, has opened a dedicated research center at 4802 Sunnybrook Drive in Sioux City, IA.
Since 2005, Meridian has conducted clinical trials at a site in Dakota Dunes, SD. All Dakota Dunes personnel and studies will be moved to the new site in Sioux City, where David Ensz, MD, will continue to serve as the principal investigator for clinical trials.

Real estate development firm, Merge Urban Development Group, plans to break ground on a new mixed-use facility in the 1200 Block of Fourth Street in Sioux City (Southwest corner of 4th Street and Floyd Blvd in Downtown Sioux City). The groundbreaking is scheduled for 1:30pm on Friday, November 6 on the project site. Merge Urban Development, with offices in Cedar Falls, Iowa and Madison, Wisconsin, purchased the property at the intersection of Floyd Blvd. and 4th Street for development into leasable market-rate residential units and first-floor commercial space.

Local small businesses affected by the impacts of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) are able to apply for the Paycheck Protection Program, or PPP, again beginning today. Businesses are encouraged to act quickly to apply for PPP funds by contacting their financial institution, accountant or attorney. Money is available on a first-come, first-serve basis and is expected to be depleted even faster than the first round of funding. Businesses who received previous funding are not allowed to receive more.
