City leaders will attend activities surrounding the christening and launch of the USS Sioux City on January 30 in Marinette, WI. The littoral combat ship, or LCS11, is designed for mine detection, anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare with a design to sail closer to the coast, known as the littoral zone. Once in the water, crews will put the vessel through months of test trials before delivering the ship to the United States Navy in 2017. The USS Sioux City will be based in Mayport, FL and will likely operate on the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, as well as in the Middle East. The Navy will strive to ensure that some of its 50 sailors assigned are from the city after which it was named.
