City Receives Award for Business Retention Project

The City of Sioux City Economic Development Department has been recognized for efforts to retain a local company that recently completed a major expansion in Southbridge Business Park. Professional Developers of Iowa (PDI) chose Sioux City to receive the 2013 PDI Business Retention and Expansion Award for the Sabre Industries, Inc. expansion project. Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds presented the award to Sioux City Economic Development Director Marty Dougherty at the Iowa Economic Development SMART Conference held May 2 in Des Moines.

The City worked extensively with Sabre, a manufacturer of steel communication and electric transmission structures, to help the company locate all Sioux City operations on one campus. The multi-phase expansion includes 192,000 square feet of production space on a 150-acre site in the new Southbridge Business Park. The initial phase includes 400 jobs and an $18 million investment. Additional phases anticipate a total investment of $28 million and 532 jobs. A ribbon cutting for the new Iowa Industrial Complex was held in January.

The PDI Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) Awards Program recognizes the outstanding efforts of local and regional economic development initiatives in supporting growth and expansion of existing Iowa companies. “Supporting Iowa’s existing industry is a key priority for PDI’s membership,” stated Lynn Harkin, PDI executive director. “The BRE Awards are intended to increase the focus on fostering Iowa business growth by economic development organizations and spotlight BRE programs and projects that have made a significant impact on Iowa communities.”

The Professional Developers of Iowa (PDI) was established in 1973 as an organization of economic development professionals working to grow and develop Iowa’s economic base. PDI’s more than 300 members come from a variety of disciplines: county and regional developers, community developers, utilities, legal and financial firms, universities, community colleges, engineering and construction firms, and railroads.
